 Addicted To Powder News

Here it is officially spring and we have just had our first A2P road trip. The usual suspects made our annual pilgrimage to Mt. Cain. With forecasted snow falls of up to 100 cm who could resist. We hit Mt Washingtub on Friday. For many of us this was our first ski of the season complete with first day gear issues. It was not uncommon to hear comments such as; hey, how come my ski gear doesn’t fit me anymore? These new boots won’t fit into these bindings. Wow, am I ever out of shape. The day started out with a dusting of powder on top of hard packed crud. Death cookies abounded. The snow began to dump around noon. The conditions improved with every run, many of the best turns were had late in the day. We hit the road for what we affectionately call the Woss Vegas Hilton and the Lucky Logger Pub. Cain greeted us with the biggest crowd of the season and DEEP powder. It appeared that some locals were frustrated at having to share the deep stuff with the influx of powder hunters. Most were friendly enough and forgave us our fickle ways. I guess we are a necessary evil. It was great to see Mt Cain drawing a full house to the local hotel and filling the eateries with guests. It bodes well for the future of the ski area when it brings much needed income to the local community which is being hit hard by the decline in forestry. One thing is true if you love to ski or board and you don’t need all the creature comforts of a big resort you must support Mt Cain with a trip or two a year. Stay at the Rugged Mountain Motel; eat at the Lucky Logger pub and the Kawasa Café. Vancouver Island does not need another Mount Arrowsmith or Forbidden Plateau. Just say NO to chair lifts and keep the dream alive.

Global warming sucks. Get those big gas guzzling SUVs off the road. With entire valleys of BC’s interior decimated by bug kill, I say the time is right for building hundreds of new hydro electric dams. Less need for coal fired power plants. Al Gore and David Suzuki are right; we have to do something now. This thing is really killing our skiing. We should be making turns right now. Instead I am raking leaves and doing homework. WTF? Lobby the government. Buy a hybrid. Anything, but please pray for snow. I just knew I should have sacrificed more small animals to Ular.

Hey! It has been a while... but I finally updated all the resort links. All the snow reports and webcam links should now all be pointing to something besides a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error :).. I am still working on the weather information for the resorts but that should be working very soon. I am in need of more resort stats for some of the resorts so if you see anything missing in the way of stats or any mistakes please email me rob at addictedtopowder.com... thats it for now.. later... oh ya.. Merry Christmas..

There is snow in them thar hills. Whistler Blackcomb has opened early and the season appears to be off to a good start. We at Addicted to Powder remain cautiously optimistic. Keep your fingers crossed and think POWDER. With the approach of Mount Cain’s probable opening day of December 8, 2007 we find it appropriate to share the following travel tip. See YOU on the slopes. Are you planning a trip to Mount Cain and need accommodations? You have to check out the Rugged Mountain Motel (250-281-2280). Within a ten minute drive of the access road this is an excellent alternative to sleeping in your car. Our experience began with a phone call to the motel which went something like this. “Hello, Lucky Logger Pub, how may I help you?” “Oh. I am sorry. I am trying to reach the Rugged Mountain Motel.” “One moment, let me change ears,” a brief pause, “Hello, Rugged Mountain Motel how may I help you?” We checked in at the Woss Vegas store and went to our rooms. We had heard mixed reviews of the facilities. Some were down right frightening. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the rooms. They were spacious and clean with all the amenities you would expect from a decent motel. We deduced that the negative reviews we had been privy to were from people with unrealistic expectations of five star facilities. A great meal was provided to us at the Lucky Logger Pub when the friendly staff recommended the daily special, roast beef dinner. We were shocked when a logger size plate of delicious food was brought to us complete with a humongous Yorkshire pudding for a very reasonable price. We ate breakfast the next morning in the restaurant at the Woss gas station. If the price of fuel is making it difficult for you to take your camper on your excursion to the best skiing on Vancouver Island and you don’t need Whistler class accommodations then the Rugged Mountain Motel is for you. Reasonable rates and convenient access to excellent food as well as the mountain itself will make this a great choice. Don’t forget to tell them Addicted to Powder sent you.
