Hello to everyone out there. Have you been enjoying the heat? I hope you are taking advantage and indulging in your favorite water sports. I will be going diving for fishing lures soon. There was a foot of new snow at some South American resorts. If you can’t afford the trip you can still make some turns on the Horstman Glacier. There is some discussion of a pilgrimage to the village in July. Check the forums section for more information. The new MEC store is now open in Victoria with lots of shiny stuff on the walls. The winter gear has yet to arrive but we will keep you posted. |

That was a great season of skiing. It began with one of the earliest openings in Whistler’s history. On Vancouver Island the early snows of November were washed away into December. We feared a repeat of the season that wasn’t. With January came the snow we had waited so long for. Winter came back with a vengeance as Whistler received one of its largest monthly accumulations ever. Mount Cain skiers finally got the green light for lift service. Mount Washington skiers got to explore the Outback and ride the Boomerang. We partied in Whistler, listened to Mad Season in the back of the van, shared a moment at the crossroads, and sang dirty songs with a wild eyed panda bear. The snow just kept on coming and we had freshies into April. Could this be a trend? In the spirit of spring’s rebirth and summer’s warmth we have added an area for your fair weather adventures. |

Mount Washington’s new Outback terrain is just what a lot of Vancouver Island riders have been waiting for. Those who have grown tired of doing laps on Fletchers Challenge will find that they now have many new ways to stimulate their adrenal glands. The half pipe shape of Beggars Canyon will be a favorite haunt of boarders as well as skiers. This steep narrow gully is flanked by high walls and steep glades, a very cool spot. Especially important to boarders will be to try and exit the canyon early so that you will have enough momentum to make it back to the lift. Dropping into any entrance of Mangroves will provide you with some steep pitches leveling off into some stellar glades. From here you can choose any number of ways back to the lift. Most involve glade skiing on varying slopes ranging from the relatively gentle slopes of Copper Glades to the challenging steeps of McKay Glades. Following under the Boomerang chair will take you into the esthetic lower Boomerang, a challenging steep. All roads lead to the lift at McKay Lake. As you descend from the trees the slope opens up into a magnificent clear cut area complete with stumps to take air off. Riding the lift back to the top the North Bowl beneath Mount Washington peak will tempt you with promises of fresh lines. After two days exploring the Outback I have yet to see it all. Don't get too excited though you will still have to go to Whistler for the real thrills. The good news is that Mount Washington with all its convenience has made the challenge of riding more accessible to the masses. Great job. |
