So you want to fight? You’ve gone a few rounds with some big springs or a steelhead or two. You have not experienced anything yet. In the Fraser River of British Columbia there are monsters lurking beneath the murky brown water. The White Sturgeon will offer you a fight like no other. Imagine trying to drag a log from the bottom of the river. Only this log has a jet motor attached to it. If you are lucky enough to hook into a big one hold onto your rod because you are in for the fight of your life. These jurassic throw backs will play you. You will struggle for inches as the fish takes miles of line. Just when you think you have it near the boat it will run for the depths over and over again. Trying to rodeo one of these babies into the boat as fast as possible is incredibly difficult. We were fortunate enough to hook up with Brian from Silversides Fishing Adventures in Mission BC. We had an incredible two days in which we hooked into twenty eight fish. We landed some shakers but most of the fish were in the 70 to 140 lb range. Our guide lived up to his reputation of finding the big ones. He handed me a rod with what we estimated to be a nine footer. I believe that this dinosaur might have weighed in over 250 lbs. After twenty minutes of crushing force I began to fish marginally and was having difficulty maintaining a tight line. I offered up the fight to one of our team. When we got the fish close to the boat it bolted for the bottom. As it sounded the line hooked up on the trim tab and snapped off. I was lead to the Holy Grail and I dropped it, a very humbling experience. We lucked out and found an amazing place to stay in Mission called the Anglers Arms bed and breakfast which is conveniently located within walking distance of Sisto’s Pub. While you are there check out Todd’s fly fishing shop and say hello to Satu from the Addicted to Powder crew. If you like to fish, if you like the challenge of a great man versus beast battle, you have to go sturgeon fishing. Big game fishing is a rush, your heart will race and adrenaline will course through your veins. You will find the juice as well as your new obsession.

Spring has arrived and with it approaches the demise of winter’s bounty. I reluctantly stored my ski equipment the other day. As I rummage through the piles of gear in my mud room I gave a glancing look back at the season that was. Many of the best days occurred mid week making them beyond my grasp. I remembered a day when two particular dirty rotten scoundrels called me at work to tell me how much fun they were having in the trees whilst I counted nuts and bolts. I should have taken my doctors advice that day and told my boss I couldn’t come into work because something was wrong with my vision, I just couldn’t see going into work. Damn work ethic. There were some epic days on Vancouver Island. Mt Cain had one day of over one hundred centimeters of untouched pow. Snorkels were definitely in order. For me the greatest thrill of the season was exploring new terrain at resorts I had never been to. Not knowing what was beyond the next corner really kicked up the adventure factor. I was fortunate enough to experience powder in the Rocky Mountains as well as in the interior of British Columbia. Yet another tick or two on the list of things to do before the asteroid hits. As I pull out everything I need to satisfy my fair weather obsessions I feel butterflies of anticipation in my stomach. Get out into the sunshine and crank your favorite summer time tunes. Wake the neighbors sol has returned and we have an extra hour of daylight.

What do you do when you have a few days off and your local hill is rained out? You check the A2P conditions page and head to where the snow is. Unfortunately you may not always escape the warm temperatures. After an expensive ferry ride and a two hour detour crawling around the latest land slide you may find that the 43 plus centimeters of powder you seek has turned into 30 centimeters of ankle breaking elephant snot. Make the best of it, keep your speed up and hop in and out of the corn snow. Get your yah yahs out because once this stuff freezes overnight you’ll be feasting on death cookies till it softens up again. If your skis “stick” in the corn try riding out on one ski to reduce drag. No matter what happens a road trip is always an adventure and hanging with your buddies is a cool thing to do as the season comes to a close.

If you think the Coast Mountains are big you should check out the Rocky Mountains. These titans of ancient sediment are so immense they will make you feel tiny and insignificant. As I ripped through the powder trying to keep my toes from freezing off I thought about the mountaineers who climb these peaks. It must take an intense amount of tenacity to combat the howling winds, blinding spin drift, extreme cold, and constantly changing weather on their push for the summit. Fortunately we skiers and boarders have an easier alternative thanks to the high speed quad. Sunshine Village Alberta has much to offer the intermediate and advanced skier. With three mountains and eight lifts you will not be disappointed with the varied terrain. Trees, chutes, open bowls, and of course steeps abound. If you are as lucky as we were you will have the privilege of experiencing the legendary rocky mountain powder. On a powder day the resort keeps the grooming to a minimum so everyone can enjoy some freshies. Goats Eye Mountain will provide everyone with a little something something. Cruisers will dig the awesome Sunshine Coast run off the top with its scenic descent to the tree line and wide open cruiser finish. Perhaps one of the finest cruising runs ever. Those who prefer tight tree lines should head for Hell’s Kitchen. If you have an addiction for steeps take a walk on the Wild Side. While you descend from its heights you can look across to Delirium Dive and dream of the day everything comes together for you and you can ski this infamous run. The Continental Divide Chair will take you to your holy grail which lies behind a gate which can only be opened by a 457 kHz key. You will also need a shovel as well as an equally equipped partner in your quest. For a fee a hired gun can be found in the village skis school. There are several areas like this within the resort with special gear requirements. Mount Standish and the Wawa chair offer the accomplished skier many opportunities to show off on runs such as Showboat. Cut your teeth on some cool little steeps like Dirty Little Corner and Headwall. My biggest complaint with Sunshine was the need for special gear and an equally equipped partner to ski the Dive. Next time I will go with a partner. You will have to do a lot of polling on the many flat areas within the resort. If you see other people straight lining for speed best follow suit chances are there is a long run out and you will need all the momentum you can get. Here are a few more tips from the lessons I learned on my trip……. 1) West Jet – The only way to go. Great service, convenient flights, very professional. Skis and boots are considered one item of luggage. 2) Rental Cars – you will pay substantially less for a two wheel drive vehicle than for a 4X4. The difference can be up to $50.00 a day. Ask the agent to throw in a set of chains. 3) Lift Tickets – Are good for Lake Louise, Sunshine Village, and Mt Norquay. Tickets of three days or more get you free shuttle bus privileges. 4) Park Passes – If you stay within the park boundaries you must get a park pass for each day you are there. This is NOT included with your hotel room. Expect to pay up to $20.00 a day. 5) Tee Pee Town Chair – avoid.
