Its official fall is here. Fishing on Vancouver Island is getting really hot. In Port Alberni we have seen a great return of Coho salmon. The large number of Chinook salmon predicted have yet to arrive in the numbers expected. Rumor has it that there has been a large commercial fishery and this may well be the cause. Fishing in the Nitnat has been a gong show with massive crowds lining the pools. Considering the effort it takes to get there if you can go somewhere else you should. With the upcoming rains we should see these issues sort themselves out as fish spread throughout the system and more return. And now for what you’ve all been waiting for………………
THE SKIING NEWS
Mt Washington is offering early bird seasons passes until October 8th. Save 30% off the regular season rate. The annual turkey sale will take place October 5, 6, 7, and 8 at the Mtn Tek Hut as well as the Altitude pro shop. This year night skiing will take place on the Whiskey Jack chair with lighting on the Coaster as well as the terrain park. Cool.
Whistler Blackcomb is offering early bird seasons passes for those of you lucky enough to take advantage for the low, low price of $1400.00. There has been some hardware upgrades but no major visible improvements to the mountains. Next winter should bring the long awaited opening of the Peak to Peak Gondola. Whistler Mountain Ski Club presents the annual turkey sale at the Blackcomb Wizard Base on October 5, 6, 7, and 8.

Fishing is starting to pick up in the Vancouver Island Rivers. The Somass has seen some really nice cohos as well as the odd spring. These fish have been silver and so clean they still have sea lice on them. It is good to see that sockeyes have been showing up as well because the return this year has been very poor. A recent trip to the Nitnat River has shown fish in the lower system, bears of course are showing up as well. Where is the rain? Fall heralds the eventual return of winter. We are all crossing our fingers for a good season of fun in the pow. |

Fall is in the air. The fishing is starting to pick up in the rivers on Vancouver Island as the salmon begin their spawn. Pink salmon are showing up in large numbers in the Campbell River and the odd Coho has been hooked as well. A new climbing area is being established near the Taylor River rest area on the way to Tofino. We are calling it the HR Macmillan Rock Garden. Climbs are very short (20m) and of easy to moderate difficulty. There are three routes. The Green Chain 5.7, A Taste of Ten 5.9+, and an as yet unfinished route called Tsunami 5.9. The Tsunami should be open for business shortly. This area is being developed with the intention of providing a local crag for the Port Alberni beginner with limited gear. A 60m rope and a dozen quick draws will be plenty to make a go of it. |

Where was all this precipitation we are experiencing here on the wet coast last winter? I posted a couple of highlight fishing photos just to keep things fresh. There are new climbing routes on the Greyback Peak near Zeballos (AKA Dale Earnhardt Dome). A new multipitch (13) climb called “Forever” (5.10 range) A new easier finish variation to the last three pitches of “Wapiti Mainline” called “Shake and Bake” (5.9 ish). These routes were established by the Romper Room crew. Thanks for your continued enthusiasm in this incredible climbing area dudes. The snows are falling in the southern hemisphere, so hop on a plane and head for the pow. See our links for world wide snow reports. |

The summer solstice approaches. Gather together all ye practitioners of mystic rituals of yore. Prepare your burnt offerings to the gods of bountiful powder. Have renewed hope that winter is on its way. The non believer shuns winters return but the faithful eagerly await its embrace. We will once again thrive in its glory in search of the perfect line. |
